Mother-of-pearl centerpiece necklace

Pearls of different shapes and shades come together to create a luminous necklace and earrings

A variety of pearls and silver S-tube beads focus attention on a mother-of-pearl donut and dangles suspended from a large toggle bar.

SUPPLIES

necklace 17 3⁄4 in. (45.1cm) with 3 1⁄4-in. (8.3cm) pendant

  • 38mm mother-of-pearl donut
  • 3 17mm glass accent beads
  • 2 or 3 1⁄4–1⁄2 in. (6–13mm) silver accent beads
  • 5 1⁄2-in. (1.3cm) silver S-tube beads
  • bicone crystals
    • 5 6mm
    • 4 4mm
  • 25 stick pearls, center-drilled hole through the narrow side
  • freshwater pearls
    • 7 6mm
    • 4 4mm
  • 2g Japanese cylinder beads
  • 1g size 11/0 Japanese seed beads
  • toggle clasp with 1 1⁄4-in. (3.2cm) bar and multiloop closure
  • 2-to-1 connector bar or the loop half of a 2-strand toggle clasp
  • toggle clasp with 7⁄8-in. (2.2cm) bar
  • 5mm silver jump ring
  • 5 crimp beads
  • 2 microcrimp beads
  • flexible beading wire, .014
  • chainnose pliers
  • crimping pliers
  • wire cutters

INSTRUCTIONS

Necklace

1. Determine the finished length of your necklace (mine is 17 3⁄4 in./45.1cm), divide that measurement in half, add 6 in. (15cm), and cut two pieces of beading wire to that length.

2. String a crimp bead, an 11/0 seed bead, and the 7⁄8-in. (2.2cm) toggle bar. Go back through the beads just strung, leaving a 3⁄4-in. (1.9cm) tail (PHOTO A). Crimp the crimp bead. Do not trim the tail.

3. String 3⁄4 in. (1.9cm) of cylinder beads on the wire and the tail (PHOTO B).

4. String a 4mm pearl, 1 1⁄2 in. (3.8cm) of cylinders, a 4mm pearl, 7⁄8 in. (2.2cm) of cylinders, a 6mm bicone crystal, three stick pearls, a 6mm pearl, two 11/0s, an S-tube bead, two 11/0s, a 6mm bicone, three stick pearls, a 6mm pearl, an 11/0, an S-tube, two 11/0s, a glass accent bead, four stick pearls, a 6mm pearl, three 11/0s, a 4mm bicone crystal, an 11/0, a crimp bead, and an 11/0 (PHOTO C).

5. Go through one loop of the loop half of the two-strand clasp or through one loop of the 2-to-1 connector bar. Go back through the last seven beads strung (PHOTO D). Tighten the wire, crimp the crimp bead, and trim the excess wire.

6. Repeat step 2 with the second wire and the loop half of the 1 1⁄4-in. (3.2cm) toggle clasp.

7. Repeat steps 3–5.

8. Open a jump ring, and slide it through the single loop of the connector bar or the loop half of the clasp and the loop of the 1 1⁄4-in. (3.2cm) toggle bar. Close the jump ring (PHOTO E).

1. Center the mother-of-pearl donut on a 6-in. (15cm) piece of beading wire. String enough cylinders to cover the wire on the front and back of the donut. String a crimp bead over both ends, tighten the wire, and crimp the crimp bead. Do not cut the tails (PHOTO F).

2. On one tail, string a 6mm pearl, a 4mm bicone, five stick pearls, an 11/0, a silver accent bead, a glass accent bead, an 11/0, and a microcrimp bead (PHOTO G).

3. Snug up the beads, flatten the crimp bead, and trim the excess wire.

4. On the second tail, string one or two silver accent beads, a 6mm bicone, an S-tube, two 11/0s, a 4mm bicone, an 11/0, and a microcrimp bead (PHOTO H).

5. Snug up the beads, flatten the crimp, and trim the excess wire.

6. Attach the donut to the necklace by inserting the toggle bar through the donut hole (PHOTO I).

Editor's note: If you can’t find stick pearls with a center-drilled hole through the narrow side of the pearl, try using black-lipped shell pieces.
