Flash flood crystal necklace

Crystals and liquid silver or gold make a splash in a multistrand necklace

A wave of liquid gold — or a current of silver — offers a fluid base for a multicolored collection of crystals. Alternate the spacing of the crystals on each strand to give each color its chance to shine. Or, use a random rainbow of crystals for a necklace that goes with everything.

  • 20–150 4mm crystals (see Color Notes for suggestions)
  • 10 3mm bicone crystals (for silver rainbow necklace)

INSTRUCTIONS
SILVER RAINBOW NECKLACE

COLOR NOTE:  For the Silver Rainbow necklace, use assorted colors of 4mm bicone crystals. You’ll need 130–150 crystals.

1a. Determine the finished length of your necklace. (Mine is approximately 17 1⁄2 in./44.5cm.) Add 6 in. (15cm) and cut five pieces of beading wire to that length. Tape one end of each wire. On one wire, string two liquid-silver beads, a 13/0 seed bead, a 4mm bicone crystal, and a 13/0. Repeat until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the desired length, ending with two liquid-silver beads. Tape the end.

1b. On the second wire, string three liquid-silver beads, a 13/0, a 4mm bicone, and a 13/0. Repeat until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the desired length, ending with three liquid-silver beads. Tape the end.

1c. On the third wire, string five liquid-silver beads, a 13/0, a 4mm bicone, and a 13/0. Repeat until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the desired length, ending with five liquid-silver beads. Tape the end.

1d. On the fourth wire, string seven liquid-silver beads, a 13/0, a 4mm bicone, and a 13/0. Repeat until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the desired length, ending with seven liquid-silver beads. Tape the end.

1e. On the fifth wire, string eight liquid-silver beads, a 13/0, a 4mm bicone, and a 13/0. Repeat until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the desired length, ending with eight liquid-silver beads. Tape the end.

2a. Arrange the strands as desired, with the longest strand on the bottom. Remove the tape from one end of a strand. String a 13/0, a 3mm bicone, a crimp bead, a 13/0, and  a soldered jump ring. Go back through the last three beads and tighten the wire. Repeat with the remaining strands, attaching all the ends on each side to a single jump ring. Check the fit, and add or remove beads from each end if necessary. Crimp the crimp beads and trim  the excess wire.

2b. Attach a split ring to one of the soldered jump rings. Open a jump ring and attach a clasp to the other soldered jump ring. Close the jump ring.

When using liquid silver or gold with a narrow (1mm) diameter, string 13/0 metallic seed beads next to the crystals. Otherwise, the “liquid” will flow into the crystals.
