Shell donut accented multistrand necklace

Lightweight yet substantial, shell donuts make a wonderful summertime accessory.

MATERIALS

  • Puca shell donuts (Fire Mountain Gems, firemountaingems.com)
    • 50 mm
    • 5 40 mm
    • 12 20 mm
  • 13 8 mm pearls
  • 34 4 mm pearls
  • 8 8 mm round silver beads
  • 10 g size 11/0 seed beads
  • 4 3 mm spacers
  • clasp
  • 6 in. (15 cm) 24-gauge wire
  • 6 crimp beads
  • 6 crimp covers (optional)
  • flexible beading wire, .010 and .014
  • chainnose pliers
  • crimping pliers
  • roundnose pliers
  • wire cutters

 

INSTRUCTIONS

GETTING STARTED

1. Cut six pieces of .010 beading wire, two in each of the following lengths: 28 in. (71cm), 20 in. (51cm), and 16 in. (41cm). 

2. Cut the 24-gauge wire in half. At one end of one piece, make a wrapped loop. String an 8mm pearl, and make a wrapped loop at the other end (PHOTO A). Repeat to make a total of two pearl units.

LONGEST STRAND

1. Over both 28-in. pieces of beading wire, center about 2 in. (5cm) of 11/0 seed beads. Loosely fold the wires in half, and string the 50mm donut over the loop (PHOTO B).

2. Bring the loop over the four wire ends (PHOTO C). Add or remove beads if necessary so that no wire is exposed and no beads extend past the loop. String an 8mm pearl over all four wires (PHOTO D). Separate the wires into two pairs of two wires each.

3. On one pair of wires, string six 11/0s and a 4mm pearl. Separate the wires. 

4. String approximately 18 11/0s on each wire. String a 20mm donut, crossing the wires through the center (PHOTO E). Add or remove beads as needed.

5. Over both wires, string a 4mm, eight 11/0s, and a 4mm.

6. Separate the wires, and string approximately 30 11/0s on each. String a 40mm donut as in step 4 (PHOTO F).

7. Repeat step 5. Repeat step 4.

8. Over both wires, string a 4mm and 18 11/0s (PHOTO G). Tape the ends.

9. Repeat steps 3–8 with the other pair of wires.

MIDDLE STRAND

1. Over both 20-in. pieces of beading wire, center a 4mm, six 11/0s, and a 4mm. 

2. On one end, string a 40mm donut as in step 6 of the longest strand.

3. Over both wires, string a 4mm, 15 11/0s, and a 4mm.

4. String a 20mm donut as in step 4 of the longest strand.

5. Over both wires, string a 4mm, 12 11/0s, and a 4mm.

6. String a 20mm donut as above, and string a 4mm over both wires (PHOTO H). Tape the ends.

7. Repeat steps 2–6 on the other end of the necklace.

SHORTEST STRAND

1. On one 16-in. piece of beading wire, center approximately 26 11/0s.

2. Go through a 40mm donut. Over both ends, string a 4mm, six 11/0s, and a 4mm (PHOTO I).

3. String a 20mm donut as in step 4 of the longest strand. 

4. Over both ends, string a 4mm, six 11/0s, and a 4mm.

5. String a 20mm donut as below.

6. Over both ends, string a 4mm and 20 11/0s (PHOTO J). Tape the ends.

7. Repeat steps 1–6 with the remaining 16-in. wire, stringing it through the other side of the 40mm donut used in step 2.

ASSEMBLY

1. Gather the three strands, and untape the wires on one end.

2. Over all six wires, string an 8mm silver bead, a crimp bead, and an 8mm silver bead. Go through the loop of a pearl unit, and go back through the last three beads (PHOTO K). Crimp the crimp bead, and trim the excess wire.

3. Repeat on the other end, making sure to snug up the beads all along the strand before crimping.

4. Cut two 8-in. (20cm) pieces of.014 beading wire.

5. On one wire, string an 8mm silver bead, a crimp bead, an 8mm silver bead, and the remaining loop of a pearl unit. Go back through the beads just strung (PHOTO L). Crimp the crimp bead, and trim the excess wire.

6. String five 8mm pearls, a 3mm spacer, a crimp bead, a 3mm, and one clasp half. Go back through the last three beads (PHOTO M), and crimp the crimp bead.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 with the other 8-in. piece of beading wire. 

8. If desired, cover the crimp beads with crimp covers (PHOTO N).
