February birthstone: Amethyst necklace and earrings

Through much of history, amethyst was a popular gemstone with the nobility. Whether you were born in February or just appreciate the power of purple, punctuate a simple chain necklace and earrings with a regal, solitary amethyst.

necklace

  • 12mm diamond-shaped amethyst bead, top drilled
  • 2 4mm stardust spacers
  • 2 3mm round spacers
  • 7 in. (18cm) 26-gauge half-hard wire
  • 16–20 in. (41–51cm) decorative chain, 1–2mm links
  • lobster claw clasp
  • chainnose and 
  • roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

earrings

  • 2 12mm diamond- shaped amethyst beads, top drilled
  • 10 in. (25cm) 26-gauge half-hard wire
  • 3 in. (7.6cm) decorative chain, 1–2mm links
  • pair of lever-back earring wires
  • chainnose and 
  • roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

    1. Decide how long you want your necklace to be. (My necklace is 17 in./43 cm.) Cut a piece of chain 2 in. (5 cm) shorter than that. Cut the chain in half.

    Cut a 3-in. (7.6cm) piece of wire. Make the first half of a wrapped loop on one end. String a 4 mm spacer, an amethyst bead, and a 4 mm spacer. Make the first half of a wrapped loop.

    2. Attach a chain to each loop of the bead unit. Complete the wraps.

    3. Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of wire. Make the first half of a wrapped loop on one end. String a 3 mm spacer and make the first half of a wrapped loop. Repeat.

    4. Attach a loop of one spacer unit to one chain. Attach a lobster claw clasp to the remaining loop. Complete the wraps. Repeat on the other end, omitting the lobster claw clasp.

    1. Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of wire. String an amethyst bead and make a set of wraps above it. Make the first half of a wrapped loop above the wraps.

    2. Cut a 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm) piece of chain. Attach the loop of the bead unit to one end. Complete the wraps.

    3. Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of wire. Make the first half of a wrapped loop on one end. Attach the chain. Complete the wraps.

    4. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. Attach the loop of an earring wire and complete the wraps. Make a second earring to match the first.
