July Birthstone: Ruby necklace and earrings

July Birthstone Ruby necklace and earrings

Rubies are perfect for summer’s sultry days, but you don’t always need a look that screams red-hot. For understated style, pick up a strand of tiny ruby rondelles, punctuate it with flecks of gold, and include a briolette for extra sparkle. Add under-five-minute hoop earrings, and you’ll have a set that’s simply radiant.

  • 10–13mm briolette
  • 15-in. (38cm) strand
  • 2–3mm faceted ruby rondelles (Knot Just Beads)
  • 4 3mm bicone crystals
  • 1g 13/0 gold-plated Charlottes or 20–30 2mm gold beads (Knot Just Beads)
  • flexible beading wire, .010 or .012
  • 2 1mm crimp beads
  • toggle clasp
  • chainnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

  • 2 10–13mm briolettes
  • pair of 20–35mm hoop earrings
  • chainnose pliers
  • bench block or anvil
  • hammer
  • metal file or emery board (optional)

Step 1
Cut a piece of beading wire. (My necklace is 15 3⁄4 in./40cm.) Center a gold bead, a briolette, and a gold bead on the wire.

Step 2
On each end, string rondelles, interspersing gold beads, until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5cm) of the finished length.

Step 3
On each end, string a bicone crystal, a crimp bead, a bicone, and half of a clasp. Check the fit, and add or remove beads from each end if necessary. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wire. Flatten the crimp bead and trim the excess wire.

Step 1
On a hoop earring, string a briolette. Bend the wire up 1⁄4 in. (6mm) from the end.

Step 2
Hammer the hoop on a bench block or anvil, being careful not to break the briolette. File the end, if necessary. Make a second earring to match the first.
To finish your necklace, use 3mm bicone crystals in a color to match the rubies. I like Swarovski crystals in Indian red, fuchsia, or Siam.
