June birthstone: Adjustable pearl necklace

When you make this simple necklace, you can adjust the length in two ways: either by varying the chain lengths or by changing the size or number of jump rings. You can also wear it in two ways — as a single or double strand — making it a go-to piece that works with any outfit. Be sure to check out the PDF for a photo of a full-length version. 


  • 8 8 mm round pearls
  • 32–36 in. (81–91 cm) chain, 3–4 mm links
  • 6 in. (15 cm) 22-gauge wire
  • 4 11–13 mm jump rings
  • 16 8–9 mm jump rings
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Step 1
Cut a 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) piece of wire. Make a plain loop. String two pearls and make a plain loop. Make four connectors.

Open an 11–13 mm jump ring and attach a loop of a connector. Close the jump ring. On each side, attach two 8–9 mm jump rings.

Step 3
Cut four 8–9-in. (20–23 cm) pieces of chain. Attach an end link and an end ring.

Step 4
Continue attaching end links and jump rings. Attach the last end link to the first jump ring.
