Flattened penny necklace and earrings

Souvenir pennies add up to a cent-imental favorite

One of my favorite vacation souvenirs is the smooshed penny. When I was younger, I just liked to squish them, but now I use them to make great jewelry.


Necklace 29 1⁄2 in. (74.9 cm)

  • 5 smooshed pennies
  • 3 14 mm oval copper beads
  • 3 10 mm round beads
  • 3 8 mm flat square beads
  • 3 8 mm coin beads
  • 3 8 mm round Czech glass beads
  • 3 6 mm round beads
  • 12 6 mm copper bead caps
  • 22 in. (56 cm) copper cable chain, 6 mm links
  • 15 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) copper head pins
  • 12 6 mm copper jump rings
  • copper toggle clasp
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • metal hole punchearrings
  • 2 smooshed pennies
  • 2 8 mm flat square beads
  • 2 8 mm coin beads
  • 7 links of copper cable chain, 6 mm links
  • 4 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) copper head pins
  • 2 6 mm copper jump rings
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • metal hole punch

Check your local bead store for supplies.

With a metal hole punch, pierce the narrow ends of each penny.

On 15 head pins, string beads in five different arrangements. Make the first half of a wrapped loop on each head pin.

Cut three 3-in. (7.6 cm) and three 4-in. (10 cm) pieces of chain. Open two jump rings and attach a 3-in. chain to one hole of the penny and a 4-in. chain to the other. Close the jump rings. Continue to attach pennies and chains, alternating the 3-in. and 4-in. chains.

On each 4-in. (10 cm) chain, attach three different dangles, spacing them evenly between the pennies. Complete the wraps.

On each 3-in. (7.6 cm) chain, attach two different dangles, as in step 4.

On each end, use a jump ring to attach half of a clasp.

Following necklace step 2, make a coin-bead unit and a square-bead unit. Cut a three-link piece of chain, attach the coin-bead unit to one end, and complete the wraps.

Following necklace step 1, punch holes in a flattened penny. Attach a square-bead unit to one hole and complete the wraps.

Open a jump ring and attach both dangles to the loop of an earring wire. Close the jump ring and pinch the loop closed. Make a second earring to match the first.
