You can create purse charms with just about anything that can be attached to a jump ring. Fasten the clasp around a narrow purse strap or a belt loop on your jeans. Or, wrap it around a thicker strap and attach the clasp to one of the chain links. Create a trinket collage by layering vertical and horizontal chains, and speak your mind without uttering a word.


Vertical purse charm

  • charms
  • word beads (Magnetic Poetry,
  • 6–10 beads or crystals, assorted sizes and colors
  • 12–15 5mm spacer beads
  • 6–10 2-in. (5cm) decorative head pins
  • 6–10 4mm 18-gauge jump rings
  • 5-in. (13cm) chain, 5–8mm links
  • 2 1⁄2 in. (6.4cm) 22-gauge half-hard wire
  • 20mm lobster claw clasp
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Horizontal purse charm

  • charms 
  • 10–12 beads or crystals, assorted sizes and colors
  • 15–20 5mm spacer beads
  • 10–12 decorative head pins
  • 10–12 4mm 18-gauge jump rings
  • 5 in. (13cm) 22-gauge half-hard wire 
  • chain (long enough to drape between purse straps), 5–8mm links
  • 2 22mm lobster claw clasps
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Step 1

1. To make a dangle with a loop on one end, string beads and spacers on a decorative head pin. Make a wrapped loop above the top bead. Make dangles as desired.

To make a bead unit, cut a 2 1⁄2-in. (6.4cm) piece of 22-gauge wire. Make a wrapped loop on one end. String beads and make a wrapped loop at the other end.

2. Cut a piece of chain to the desired length. Open a jump ring. Attach a charm or a few dangles on the jump ring. Attach the jump ring to a chain link. Close the jump ring. Repeat with the remaining charms and dangles.

3. Open a jump ring. Attach the end of a piece of chain and a bead unit with two loops. Close the jump ring. Open another jump ring and attach a bead unit and the lobster claw clasp. Close the jump ring. For a horizontal purse charm, attach a clasp to the other end.
