Chinese lanterns

Light up the night with a pair of earrings to celebrate the Lantern festival during the Chinese New Year

The Lantern Festival is a traditional Chinese festival celebrated on the 15th day of the Chinese New Year. During the full moon, thousands of colorful lanterns are hung. But there’s no need to wait for a full moon or even a special occasion — you can make these earrings in a matter of minutes and wear them tonight.


  • 2 16 mm lampworked beads (SueBeads,
  • 4 6 mm rondelles
  • 6 4 mm crystals
  • 2 9/0 seed beads (optional) 
  • 5 in. (13 cm) 24-gauge half-hard wire
  • 6 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) decorative head pins
  • pair of earring wires
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters

Step 1
On a decorative head pin, string a crystal and make a plain loop. Make three crystal units.

Step 2
Cut a 2 1⁄2-in. (6.4 cm) piece of wire and make a wrapped loop. String a rondelle, a lampworked bead, and a rondelle. Make a wrapped loop.

Step 3
Open the loop of a crystal unit and attach a loop of the bead unit. Close the loop. Repeat with the remaining crystal units.

Step 4
Open the loop of an earring wire and attach the dangle. Close the loop. Make a second earring to match the first.
To embellish earring wires, dot glue on each wire above the loop, and string a seed bead.
