Lunar New Year necklace

String a parade of glowing lanterns with crystals and pearls

I plan to wear this festive necklace to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Inspired by the red and gold Chinese lanterns that are traditional festival décor, I combined crystal rondelles and pearls to mimic the look and showcase bold colors that symbolize wealth and happiness.


Necklace 16 1⁄2–18 1⁄2 in. (41.9–47 cm) 

  • 18 mm crystal rondelle 
  • 6 12 mm crystal rondelles
  • 32–36 8 mm round pearls
  • 6 6 mm round pearls
  • 2 8 mm rhinestone rondelles
  • 12 5 mm rhinestone rondelles
  • 34–38 4 mm bicone crystals
  • flexible beading wire, .014 or .015
  • 6 in. (15 cm) 22-gauge wire
  • 6 2-in. (5 cm) head pins
  • 5 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) head pins
  • 2 crimp beads
  • 2 Wire Guardians
  • hook-and-eye clasp or box clasp
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • 2 crimp covers (optional)
  • crimping pliers (optional)

Check your local bead store for supplies.

Step 1
To make a pearl unit: On a 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) head pin, string a pearl. Make a wrapped loop. Make five pearl units.

To make a connector: Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of 22-gauge wire. On one end, make the first half of a wrapped loop. String a pearl. Make a wrapped loop.

Attach three pearl units to the bottom loop of the connector. Complete the wraps.

Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of 22-gauge wire. Make a plain loop. Open the loop, and attach a pearl unit, the connector, and a pearl unit. Close the loop.

To make a large lantern: On the wire, string an 8 mm rhinestone rondelle, an 18 mm crystal rondelle, and an 8 mm rhinestone rondelle. Make a wrapped loop perpendicular to the plain loop.

To make a small lantern: On a 2-in. (5 cm) head pin, string a 5 mm rhinestone rondelle, a 12 mm crystal rondelle, and a 5 mm rhinestone rondelle. Make a wrapped loop. Make six small lanterns.

Cut a 23–25-in. (58-64 cm) piece of beading wire. String a bicone crystal, the large lantern, and a bicone. Center the beads on the wire.

On each end of the wire, string an 8 mm pearl, a small lantern, and a bicone. Repeat twice.

On each end of the wire, string an 8 mm pearl and a bicone. Repeat until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length.

Step 10
On each end of the wire, string a crimp bead, a Wire Guardian, and half of a clasp. Check the fit, and add or remove beads from each end if necessary. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wire. Crimp the crimp bead and trim the excess wire. If desired, close a crimp cover over each crimp (optional).

Luminous color

The color of the Swarovski crystal rondelles and bicones is red magma. The Swarovski pearls are gold.
