August birthstone: Peridot necklace

This tiny angular charm reminds me of a precious gem. What better way to wear it than with real gemstones? Peridot was a natural choice, since green and gold look lovely together.


Necklace 17 in. (43 cm)

  • 15 mm “diamond cut” charm
  • 15-in. (38 cm) strand 16 mm oval faceted peridot beads
  • 18–36 3 mm green crystals
  • 12–14 3 mm accent crystals
  • 20–24 2–3 mm round spacers
  • flexible beading wire,.014 or.015
  • 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) head pin
  • 2 crimp beads
  • 2 Wire Guardians
  • lobster claw clasp
  • 1-in. (2.5 cm) chain for extender
  • chainnose and roundnose pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • crimping pliers (optional)

1. Open a jump ring. Attach a charm and close the jump ring. Cut a piece of beading wire 23–25 in. (58–64 cm). Center the charm on the wire.

2. On each side of the pendant, string a spacer, an accent crystal, a spacer, and 1–2 in. (2.5–5 cm) of peridot beads. Repeat three or four times. End with a spacer, an accent crystal, and a spacer.

3. On one end of the wire, string: 1–2 in. (2.5–5 cm) of green crystals, crimp bead, accent crystal, Wire Guardian, lobster claw clasp. Go back through the last few beads strung and tighten the wire. Crimp the crimp bead and trim the excess wire.

4. Repeat step 3 on the other end, substituting a 1-in. (2.5 cm) chain for the clasp. On a head pin, string a peridot bead and make the first half of a wrapped loop. Attach the end link of chain and complete the wraps.
