Amethyst slice earrings

Set in gold or silver plate, these amethyst pendants reveal beautiful stripes and layers of color. To highlight their long, lean shape, display them before a curtain of chain. I used rolo chain with tiny links, but any assortment of scrap chain will play up the stones’ unique markings.

  • 2 26–48 mm amethyst slice pendants
  • 3–4 ft. (.9–1.2 m) chain, 2–2.5 mm links
  • 2 7–8 mm jump rings
  • pair of earring wires
  • 2 pairs of pliers
  • diagonal wire cutters
  • hammer and bench block

1. Cut and remove the attached jump ring from a pendant. On a bench block, gently hammer a 7–8 mm jump ring.

2. If desired, hammer an earring wire.

3. Cut seven to nine 11⁄2–3-in. (3.8–7.6 cm) pieces of chain. Open the jump ring. Attach an end link of each chain and close the jump ring.

4. Open the loop of the earring wire. Attach the pendant and the chain dangle. Close the loop. Make a second earring the mirror image of the first.

The jump rings that came with the pendants were too thick to fit through 2 mm link chain. If you like, use the original jump rings; just make sure your chain has 2.5 mm or larger links.
