String jasper in shades of sand and surf
Although I’ve been a Midwesterner all my life, I absolutely adore the ocean — so much so that it inspired this necklace. As soon as I spotted this strand of aqua terra jasper, I knew exactly how it should look. The unique cut and color of the beads capture the beauty of teal-blue seas and sandy shores with little help from me. I used this lovely jasper in this necklace, but any gemstone in shades of blue and brown will work.

step 2

1. Cut a piece of beading wire. String 9–10 in. (23–25 cm) of stick beads. Center the beads.

2. On each end, string: spacer, round bead, spacer, round, spacer, faceted rondelle. Repeat until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length.

Step 3

3. On each end, string a crimp bead, a 1⁄4-in. (6 mm) piece of French (bullion) wire, and half of a toggle clasp. Check the fit, and add or remove beads if necessary. Go back through the last few beads strung and tighten the wire. Crimp the crimp bead and trim the excess wire.

Joan attaches a clasp with both security and aesthetics in mind: “I like to use tornado crimps and French (bullion) wire on all of my pieces for a more finished look.”
