’Tis the season

Decorate your home with this festive peyote panel
Tis the season key

The holidays have special memories. We think of presents under the tree, stockings filled with candy and toys from St. Nick, and snowflakes blanketing the yard. To add a new memory to your holidays, hang this panel on the tree or on your front door to welcome guests.

Peyote panel

1. On a comfortable length of thread, attach a stop bead, leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail. Referring to the pattern, work in flat even-count peyote stitchusing 11/0 cylinder beads in colors A–L. End and add thread as needed.

2. Fold the top of the panel to the back, and zip up the top row to the 22nd row from the top. End the working thread and tail.

1. Add 1 yd. (.9 m) of thread to the peyote panel, exiting an edge A in the bottom row with your needle pointing toward the center of the row.

2. Pick up six As. Skip the last A picked up, sew back through the next five As, sew through the A in the panel your thread exited at the start of this step, and continue through the next A in the bottom row.

3. Repeat step 2 across the bottom of the panel, increasing the length of each fringe by one A through the 20th fringe. For the remainder of the panel, decrease the length of each fringe by one A. End the thread.

1. Cut a 5 1⁄2-in. (14 cm) piece of 18-gauge wire, and make a mark 23⁄8 in. (6 cm) from one end. Using roundnose pliers, grasp the wire at the mark, and wrap the longer end around one jaw of the pliers, making a loop (PHOTO).

2. Make another mark 1 in. (2.5 cm) from one end of the wire. Using roundnose pliers, grasp the wire at the mark, and bend the wire to create a 45-degree angle. Repeat this step on the other end of the wire. Slide each end into the peyote tube at the top of the panel.
