Mosaic medallion earrings

Make these quick earrings using right-angle weave and beads from your stash

Mosaic medallion earrings
Pull pearls, gemstones or an assortment of beads from your stash and weave these sweet flowers. Add edging in a complementary or contrasting color.
Tip!

Substitute 4 mm bicone crystals for the color B fire-polished beads to add even more glamour.

Materials

Green pair of earrings 1 in. (2.5 cm)

  • 4 mm round fire-polished beads
  • 22 color A (opaque pale green stardust, czechbeads.com)
  • 16 color B (stone green luster,  czechbeads.com) 
  • 6 3 mm glass pearls (light gold)
  • 1-2 g 15/0 seed beads (Miyuki 457L, metallic light bronze)
  • pair of earring findings
  • Fireline 6 lb. test
  • beading needles, #12

Apricot-and-green earring colors: 

  • 4 mm round fire-polished beads
    - color A (opaque rose and topaz luster, shipwreckbeads.com)- color B (stone green luster, czechbeads.com)
  • 3 mm glass pearls (light gold)
  • 15/0 seed beads (Miyuki 457L, metallic light bronze)

Medallion

Lower medallion

1. On 26 in. (66 cm) of Fireline, pick up a repeating pattern of a 15/0 seed bead and a color A 4 mm fire-polished bead three times, leaving an 8-in. (20 cm) tail. Sew through all six beads again to form a ring. Tie a square knot, and sew through the next two beads to exit an A (Figure 1, a-b).

 

2. Pick up a 15/0, an A, a 15/0, an A, and a 15/0, and sew through the A your thread exited at the start of this step and the first four beads just added (b-c).

 

3. Pick up a 15/0, an A, a 15/0, a color B 4 mm fire-polished bead, and a 15/0, and sew through the A your thread exited at the start of this step and the first two beads just added (c-d).

 

4. Pick up a 15/0, a B, a 15/0, an A, and a 15/0, and sew through the A your thread exited at the start of this step and the first four beads just added (d-e).

 

5. Repeat step 3 (e-f).

 

6. Join the ends to form a ring: Pick up a 15/0, a B, and a 15/0, and sew through the adjacent A in step 1. Pick up a 15/0, and sew through the A in the last stitch (f-g).

7. Sew through the beadwork to exit the inside A between the two As on the outer edge (Figure 2, point a). With the tail, sew through the center ring of 15/0s. End the tail.

 

Upper medallion 

1. Sew through the next 15/0 and A along the outer edge (a-b).

 

2. Pick up a 150, a B, a 150, an A, and a 15/0, and sew through the A your thread exited at the start of this step (b-c) and the first four beads just added (c-d).

 

3. Pick up a 15/0, an A, a 15/0, a B, and a 15/0. Sew through the A your thread exited at the start of this step and the first two beads just added (d-e).

 

4. Repeat step 2 (e-f).

 

5. Pick up a 15/0, and sew through the adjacent A in the lower medallion (f-g). Pick up a 15/0, a B, and a 15/0, and sew through the A your thread exited at the start of this step (g-h). Sew through all six 15/0s in the center ring, and snug up the beads.

 

Edging

1. Sew through the beadwork to exit the top inside A in the upper medallion (Figure 3, point a). Sew through the next 15/0, B, and 15/0 along the outer edge (a-b). Pick up a 15/0, and sew through the next 15/0 and B (b-c).

 

2. Pick up a 15/0, a 3 mm pearl, and a 15/0, and sew through the following B and 15/0 along the outer edge (c-d).

 

3. Pick up a 15/0, and sew through the next 15/0, B, and 15/0. Repeat this step twice, but in the last repeat, sew through only a 15/0 and a B (d-e).

 

4. Repeat step 2, then pick up a 15/0, and sew through the next 15/0, B, and 15/0. Pick up a 15/0, and sew through the next 15/0 (e-f). 

 

5. Pick up two 15/0s, a 3 mm pearl, and an earring finding, and sew back through the 3 mm. Pick up two 15/0s, and sew through the three 15/0s your thread exited at the start of this step (f-g). Retrace the thread path of the earring connection, and end the threads.

 

6. Make a second earring.
