1. On a comfortable length of thread, pick up a pattern of a color B 11/0 seed bead and a 3.4 mm drop bead until you have 48 beads. Sew through all the beads again to form a ring, leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail. Sew through the beads once more, and exit a drop bead.

2. Work rounds of netting off the ring as follows, ending and adding thread as needed:

Round 1: Pick up four color A 11/0 seed beads, a B, a drop bead, a B, and four As. Skip two drop beads in the ring from step 1, and sew through the following drop bead (Figure 1, a-b). Repeat this stitch seven times to complete the round, and step up through the first six beads picked up in this round, exiting the drop bead (b-c).

Round 2: Pick up five As, a B, a drop bead, a B, and five As. Sew through the next drop bead in round 1 (c-d). Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first seven beads picked up in this round.

Round 3: Pick up six As, a B, a drop bead, a B, and six As. Sew through the next drop bead in round 2. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first eight beads picked up in this round.

Round 4: Pick up eight As, a B, a drop bead, a B, and eight As. Sew through the next drop bead in round 3. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first 10 beads picked up in this round.

Round 5: Pick up seven As, a 6 mm crystal pearl, a drop bead, a pearl, and seven As. Sew through the next drop bead in round 4. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first nine beads picked up in this round.

Round 6: Pick up a pearl, seven As, three Bs, seven As, and a pearl. Sew through the next drop bead in round 5. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first 10 beads picked up in this round, exiting the center B in the stitch.

3. Place the beadwork on the ornament, and work the next rounds of netting as follows:

Round 7: Pick up a B, eight As, three Bs, eight As, and a B. Sew through the center B in the next stitch of round 6. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first 11 beads picked up in this round, exiting the center B in the stitch.

Round 8: Pick up a B, seven As, three Bs, seven As, and a B. Sew through the center B in the next stitch of round 7. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first 10 beads picked up in this round.

Round 9: Pick up a B, five As, three Bs, five As, and a B. Sew through the center B in the next stitch of round 8. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first eight beads picked up in this round.

Round 10: Pick up a B, five As, three Bs, five As, and a B. Sew through the center B in the next stitch of round 9. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, and step up through the first eight beads picked up in this round.

Round 11: Pick up five Bs, and sew through the center B in the next stitch of round 10. Repeat this stitch to complete the round, pulling the thread to snug the beadwork around the ornament. Retrace the thread path through this round, and end the working thread and tail.

Tip!

When working round 11, check to make sure that picking up five As per stitch pulls the beadwork tightly around the ornament without any thread showing. If there are gaps between the beads in this round, pick up more beads per stitch so that no thread is showing in round 11.

4. Add a comfortable length of thread to the bottom of the ornament, exiting a center B in any stitch from round 10.

5. Pick up three drop beads, seven As, a pearl, seven As, and three drop beads. Sew through the B your thread exited at the start of this step, forming a looped fringe, and continue through the next six Bs (Figure 2). Repeat this step to add looped fringe to all the center Bs in round 10, and then sew diagonally through the beadwork to exit a center B in round 9.

6. Work as in step 5 to add looped fringe to all the center Bs in round 9, ending and adding thread as necessary. Continue in this manner to add looped fringe to all the center Bs in rounds 8, 7, and 6. End the working thread.
