Celebrate National Beading Week 2017

What better way to celebrate than in the company of like-minded people doing what we love best, beading?

2017 marks the third annual National Beading Week, sponsored by The Beadworkers Guild in the UK. The Guild proclaims this week, July 29-Aug 6, 2017, to be a time to celebrate our passion for beads, to encourage others to start beading, and to support bead businesses around the country.

Most of the festivities are based in the UK, but there is no reason that we cannot celebrate on our side of the pond! The goal of National Beading Week is to bring together as many beaders as possible. Here's some ideas how you can celebrate:

  • Organize a special meeting of your beading society (or just your crafty friends!) and celebrate together. Bring your current projects or sticky problems (OR DON'T!) and maybe meet at a restaurant or coffee shop. Have some snacks, or a glass of wine or two!
  • Organize a “Round Robin” with your beading friends by getting members to bead one item and then pass it on to the next member to add on something new. This is a great idea for all of you in Facebook groups who don't live near each other to meet up in person. What fun to get that package in the mail!
  • Trying to inspire new beaders in your local community? Host a beading open house, invite beginners to your meeting and share your knowledge. This could be in your home, or be sure check with your local senior center, community center, park district, or library. Having a municipal partner is great when it comes to publicizing the event, and they may have tables and chairs that you can use. You never know who may stop by!
  • Organize a gallery-style exhibition of your work to show to the public. This could be held at your meeting venue, the local library or another public venue that offers exhibition space. Maybe you can get together with your nearest beading shop and organize an event together. Have a raffle or a silent auction to benefit a local food pantry or another worthy local cause.
  • Put together a Bead Bombing! Taking a cue from the knitters and crocheters who have brightened their neighborhoods by adding yarn craft to trees, benches, bus stops and more, use up part of your stash and beautify the urban landscape with some sparkle and flash. The National Beading Week Pinterest page has some hilarious and charming ideas to get you started!
  • Do you have a favorite bead shop in your community? Let them know how much you appreciate them by stopping by with donuts, or sending flowers or a potted plant. Even just a greeting card will be sure to brighten the day of the people who work so hard to keep your beads and baubles at the ready!

Whether you are an individual beader, beading group, internet seller or a local bead shop, there are tons of other ideas for ways to celebrate on the National Beading Week website that are sure to inspire you. Free downloads including patterns and stitch instructions are only a small sampling of what's available. Check it out!
