Bead-It-Forward quilts

If you are looking for that special and unique gift, either for yourself or to give to someone special (after all, Christmas is right around the corner!), check out the new Etsy site for Bead-it-Forward. They are offering lovely quilts for sale featuring handmade beadwork donated by stitchers from all over the world. This is a wonderful way to show support during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Bead-it-Forward is an annual fundraising campaign that raises money for breast cancer research. Founded in 2005 by Jeanette Shannigan to honor the memory of her late mother, who died of the disease, the initiative calls for beaders to contribute squares of beadwork that follow an annual theme. These lovely little squares (1.5” x 1.5”) are made into quilts, shadowboxes, ornaments, cards, and other items, that are then sold. The money earned goes to this very deserving cause.

This year, the profits (100% of sales minus the Etsy seller fees) earned from the sale of the quilts will be donated to The Healing Garden in Harvard, MA, a cancer support center that offers counseling and integrative care to clients, and the Rays of Hope Breast Cancer Research Center of Springfield, MA, a medical research facility where scientists are working aggressively to alter breast cancer risks and to improve prognosis. The quilts available in the Etsy store feature beadwork from both the 2015 and 2016 Bead-it-Forward themes, Animals and Space.

The quilts used to attach the squares were donated by Knit One, Quilt Two and Quilts & Treasures, both also in Massachusetts. These quilts are one-of-a-kind items so get them before they’re gone!

Want to contribute to next year’s initiative? The theme for 2017 is Fantasy: Dreaming for a cure.
