Wire and chain earrings

Crystals and gemstones sparkle in wire earrings

Briolettes and crystals dangle from wire and chain in these dramatic earrings. You’ll use some basic wire-wrapping techniques to secure the beads to the center bar. The bicone-embellished earring wires are a nice complement to the design.

  • 2 7 mm or 8 mm briolettes
  • 2 6 mm or 7 mm briolettes
  • 6 5 mm briolettes

  • 3 ft. (.9 m) 24-gauge gold-filled dead-soft wire
  • 4 in. (10 cm) gold-filled, fine, open-link chain
  • 20 1 1⁄2-in. (3.8 cm) 24-gauge head pins

Wire and chain earrings Step 1
Step 1
To make the top component, cut a 2 1⁄2-in. (6.4 cm) piece of 18-gauge wire. Mark the center of the wire. Using roundnose pliers, grasp the wire at the mark and cross the wire ends underneath the jaw. On each end of the wire, make a loop in the same plane as the first loop, turning them toward the center.

Step 2
To make the center bar, cut a 15⁄8-in. (4.1 cm) piece of 18-gauge wire. On each end, make a 3 mm plain loop.

Step 3
To make the figure-8 links, cut a 3⁄4-in. (1.9 cm) piece of 18-gauge wire. Make a loop on one end, then make another loop in the opposite direction on the other end, forming a figure 8. Adjust the loops so they are equal in size. Make a second link.

Step 4

To make the briolette dangles, cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of 24-gauge wire, and string a large briolette on the wire. Make a set of wraps above the top-drilled bead, then use the wire tail to make the first half of a wrapped loop, positioning the loop perpendicular to the briolette and keeping a short distance between the top of the briolette and the loop.

Repeat with a medium briolette and three small briolettes, finishing the wraps on the small briolettes.

Step 5
To make the crystal dangles, string a 4 mm crystal and a 3 mm crystal on a head pin, and make a plain loop. Make a total of 10 crystal dangles.

Step 6
Attach the large briolette unit to the top component where the wire intersects. Complete the wraps.

Step 7a
Cut a 2-in. (5 cm) piece of chain. Attach the medium briolette to the center link and complete the wraps.

Step 7b
Open the loop of a crystal dangle, skip the link adjacent to the briolette, and attach the dangle. Continue attaching dangles to every other link; be sure to attach them to the bottom of the links so the dangles hang properly.

Step 8a
Cut a 6-in. (15 cm) piece of 24-gauge wrapping wire. Starting on one end of the center bar, wrap the wire around the bar two or three times to secure it. Use pliers to press the tail against the center bar. Make a few more wraps, then string a 3 mm bead on the wire, positioning the bead on the lower edge of the center bar.

Step 8b
Make three more wraps. Then open a loop of the center bar, and string a small-briolette unit on the center bar.
