Image transfer pendant

Transform a blank brass canvas into a mini work of art

Cut, file, texture. Transfer an image, imprint text, set rivets — this project is a jewelry artist’s dream! (And it’s deceptively easy.) You can further embellish your piece with a few beads and subtle brass findings. You’ll have so much fun making your metal masterpiece, you may find yourself creating an entire collection.



  • 3-in. (7.6 cm) altered blank canvas
  • 43 x 20 mm scrolled frame
  • 2 1⁄8-in. (3 mm) nail-head rivets
  • bench block and rubber mat
  • brass jeweler's hammer
  • chasing hammer
  • letter stamp set
  • metal file
  • metal two-hole punch or hole-punch pliers
  • tin snips or cutting shears
  • acrylic paint dabbers
  • alcohol inks
  • sharpie marker
  • acrylic sealer (optional)
  • rub-on or water-slide image transfer sheet (optional)

Step 1
Use metal snips to cut a 1 1⁄2 x 3⁄4-in. (3.8 x 1.9 cm) rectangle from the canvas. Trim and round off the corners with a metal file.

Step 2
Mark the center on the top and bottom of the frame. Use the smaller hole of a two-hole punch or hole-punch pliers to make two holes.

Use the holes in the frame as a guide to mark holes on the canvas. Punch two holes in the canvas.

Follow the package instructions to transfer an image onto the canvas. On a bench block, hammer letter stamps to imprint text on the canvas with a jeweler’s hammer.

Use brass plates, texture hammers, or metal decorative stamps to add texture to the canvas.

Dab acrylic paint on the frame and the canvas. Remove the excess paint from the canvas with a paper towel, leaving some paint to accentuate the text. Apply alcohol ink to both pieces. Allow to dry. Apply a sealer if desired.

Step 7
On a rivet, stack the frame on the canvas. Use a chasing hammer to strike the rivet squarely to flatten the end. Repeat with another rivet.
