Bicycle chain bracelet

Adding glass rings to easy chain maille creates a lively, colorful bracelet

Silver jump rings and shiny glass cheerios make a cheerful combination. For casual elegance, try gemstones or matte glass in a single color. 


Bracelet 7 in. (18 cm)

  • 16 9 mm glass rings, cheerios, or donuts with 4 mm hole
  • 68 6 mm inside-diameter 
  • 18-gauge jump rings
  • fold-over clasp
  • 2 pairs of chainnose pliers

1. Open a jump ring, attach two glass rings, and close the jump ring (photo a). Open a second jump ring, slide it through the same two glass rings to sit parallel to the first jump ring, and close the jump ring (photo b).

2. Open a jump ring, attach a new glass ring to the previous glass ring, and close the jump ring. Repeat with a second jump ring (photo c).

3. Open a jump ring. Position the four jump rings attached to the second-to-last glass ring near each other, and attach the new jump ring to the four jump rings above the glass ring. Close the jump ring (photo d). Flip the chain over and repeat on the other side, so the glass ring is sandwiched between two jump rings (photo e).

4. Repeat step 2 (photo f) and step 3 (photo g), and continue building the chain until the bracelet is 1 in. (2.5 cm) short of the desired length.

5. Attach a pair of jump rings to the glass rings at each end of the bracelet, and then repeat step 3 at each end (photo h).

6. Open a jump ring, and attach the clasp and the two jump rings at one end of the bracelet. Close the jump ring (photo i). Attach a jump ring to the two rings at the other end of the bracelet.
