Step b

1. Count out 172 4.1 mm (small) jump rings. Close three small rings, and open the remaining rings

2. To help the swags drape properly, the main chain will begin and end with a single ring. Slide an open small ring through the three closed small rings (a), and close it. Slide a second open ring through the same three rings, and close it. This is called doubling. Arrange the rings into a 1+2+2 chain (b).

4. Fold back the last pair of rings, one to each side, to expose the middle pair of rings. Use your thumb and forefinger to hold the folded-back rings in place (d). Separate the exposed middle pair of rings so that the folded-back rings are visible (e).

8. Work as in steps 4 and 5. Not counting the single starter ring, the first full Byzantine pattern is complete (h).

9. Repeat steps 6–8 until you have used all 172 small rings. End this chain with a single small ring.

10. Open the remaining small rings. Divide the rings into four groups of 52 rings and one group of four rings. For each of the four Byzantine swags, repeat steps 2–9 using the groups of 52 rings; start and finish each swag with a single small ring (i). Set aside the remaining four small rings for steps 16 and 17.
