Make a modern locket

Personalize a sterling silver locket for a treasured keepsake

Materials

  • Sterling silver sheet:
    - 20-gauge (0.8mm), 3 x 6 in. (76 x 152mm)
    - 26-gauge (0.4mm), 3 x 6 in. (76 x 152mm)
  • Sterling silver wire:
    - 18-gauge (1.0mm), round, half-hard, 3 in. (76mm)
    - 12-gauge (2.1mm), round, half-hard, 2 in. (51mm)
  • Sterling silver tubing:
    - 1.0mm ID, 1 in. (25.5mm)
    - 9.5mm ID, heavy-walled, 3 in. (76mm)
  • 18k or 14k gold wire (optional):
    - 18-gauge (1.0mm), round, half-hard, 3 in. (76mm)
    - 12-gauge (2.1mm), round, half-hard, 2 in. (51mm) 

Tools & supplies

  • Dividers
  • Disk cutter
  • Jeweler’s saw, 2/0 blades
  • Wooden dapping block and punches
  • Sandpaper: various grits
  • Soldering station: torches, solder, fire-resistant work surface, pickle pot with pickle, flux, steel tweezers, copper tongs, tripod
  • Tube-cutting jig
  • Tape: masking, double stick
  • Needle files
  • 1.5mm diamond-core drill (optional)
  • Correction fluid or anti-flux
  • Iron binding wire
  • Third hand
  • Wire cutters
  • Flex shaft, assorted drill bits and burs
  • Flatnose pliers
  • Cross-peen hammer
  • Bench anvil
  • Polishing materials
  • Patinating materials (optional)
  • 4mm steel rod or dapping punch
  • Drafting templates
