JoAnna Trevizo-Gonzalez of New Smyrna Beach, FL, won the Reader's Choice Award for our June Design Challenge, UPCYCLE. For this piece, IN ALL HIS GLORY, she used discarded brooches, broken rhinestone necklaces, and vintage lead crystal beads from strands of broken necklaces. JoAnna wire-wrapped the pieces to create a choker necklace that can be worn at anytime. As she describes, "Mixing together all the pieces from a glorious bygone era brought this piece to life."

ARE YOU A PROFESSIONAL JEWELRYMAKER, OR IS THIS A HOBBY? WHAT TECHNIQUES AND MATERIALS DO YOU WORK WITH?

I am a full-time artist. I started making jewelry after the birth of my fourth child. I love learning all styles! I have beaded and learned to weave—also to weave beads together! I've been wire-wrapping sculpture to be worn in more of a couture kind of style. In the future, I want to learn how to make my own cabochons and silversmithing. I enjoy working with broken or discarded things. I use sea glass and seashells that I collect myself with my children for many projects. Silver and copper are usually the metals I prefer to use.

HOW DID YOU LEARN JEWELRY MAKING?

Self-taught mostly. I do enjoy reading every book that I can get my hands on that has to do with jewelry making.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORK?

My father was an inspiration when it came to wire wrapping, he used to take brass paper clips and make baby rings. I also find inspiration in nature. Old designs, as well. I will watch old black and whites to try to catch a glimpse of any jewelry worn. Art deco is an era that I love and find inspiration in.

WHAT IS YOUR WORKSPACE LIKE? WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO CREATE?

My workspace is a mess, but I know where everything is! I have a balcony and live near the beach, so you would think it would be one of those places that I'd prefer to work. It is not. I am usually on my bed or spread out on the floor with coffee, headphones and some kind of show that I can binge-watch.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE SEE MORE OF YOUR WORK?
