String art earrings

Wind thread around easy wire frames

Remember Spirograph or string art, made by winding thread around nails hammered into a board? There’s no hammering needed for these earrings, but they still have that ’70s feel. Just wind thread between coils strung over wire frames. You’ll love learning this new technique and feeling groovy with your wearable string art earrings.

Step 2

1. To make a coil: Hold the handle of the coiling tool in your right hand. String 22- or 24-gauge wire through the hole in the crossbar. Bend the end to stabilize it, and allow the spool to hang freely.

2. Hold the wire against the rod, near the handle. Guide the wire with your left hand while spinning the handle with your right index finger. Remove the coil and pull the ends to slightly separate the coils. Make two 4-in. (10 cm) coils.

3. For each earring: Cut a 5-in. (13 cm) piece of 12-gauge wire. String the coil. Wrap the wire around a cylindrical object tomake a teardrop-shaped frame.

4. On one end, trim the wire to 1⁄2 in. (1.3 cm). Make a plain loop perpendicular teardrop.

5. Leaving the thread on the spool, tie a surgeon’s knot to attach the thread to  the top of the frame, leaving a 3-in. (7.6 cm) tail. Wind the thread around the teardrop by pulling it straight to the bottom, between the two center coils. Bring it back up behind the teardrop, between the two coils next to the knot. Bring the thread back down to the coils just to the left of the center ones.

6. Continue winding the thread back and forth between coils, working your way around the entire frame. Tie a surgeon’s knot around the stem.

Small, textured bangle bracelets make sturdy frames for thread. Look for thin ones with large loops. These are from Fusion Beads, fusionbeads.com.
Tip!
As you pull the thread between the coils, don’t pull the wire too tightly. Otherwise you risk changing the shape of the frame.
