The leaves are falling, rakes are being traded in for shovels, and soon, we will have something white and frozen on the ground.

But, before we get ahead of ourselves, let's take a trip down memory lane to last October, when the leaves were still bright and colorful, and Halloween decorations adorned every house. It's never too late to share a stunning piece of jewelry - and words from its creator - even after time has passed, which brings me to the subject of this piece: Natalya Staroseltseva, the winner of our October Design Challenge, BUMP IN THE NIGHT.

Natalya is a jewelry maker who hails from Keszthely, Hungary and her winning piece is titled WISE OWL BROOCH. Below are her responses to our questions, so keep reading to learn more about Natalya and where this Design Challenge winner gets her inspiration from!

ARE YOU A PROFESSIONAL JEWELRY-MAKER, OR IS THIS A HOBBY? HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN CREATING?

Jewelry crafting is my hobby, and I've been doing it since 2012.

HOW DID YOU LEARN JEWELRY-MAKING?

From fantasizing. I think about how [something] should look, and then how, and from what material, it can be done. If there is something I do not know how to do, I look for masterclasses on the Internet, and [read] tips from experienced masters. I am self-taught, [learning] through trials and errors.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE THAT YOU EVER GOT FROM A TEACHER OR A MENTOR?

The reverse side of the product should be as beautiful as the front.

WHAT STYLE OF JEWELRY DO YOU MAKE? HAVE YOU EVER WORKED IN DIFFERENT STYLES/MEDIUMS? WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN ESTHETIC?

I work in different styles. Perhaps it can be called "smart romance". I want my jewelry to tell stories. Each product must have its own charisma.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MATERIALS TO USE IN YOUR WORK?

I really like working with silver, resin, and untreated crystals. I love the original combination of materials. And I like materials that are unusual for jewelry: leather, plants, pebbles, etc.

WHAT IS YOUR WORKSPACE LIKE? TELL US TWO THINGS THAT YOU ALWAYS HAVE WITH YOU WHEN YOU WORK.

I do not have a studio. I organize my work corner in the kitchen. Usually, it is hidden.

I work, I listen to audiobooks - historical and adventurous novels, and fantasy. Or, I listen to classical music. I really love the smell of lavender oil. It is related to silver for me [because] plastic silver becomes more elastic if it involves lavender oil.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR YOUR WORK?

I take inspiration from art deco, drawing, and traveling. But the best ideas that I dreamed of, or accidentally [discovered], are items themselves [that] are added to the desktop in sketches of future jewelry.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE SEE MORE OF YOUR WORK?

You can view me on my Facebook and Instagram pages under Tashadecor.
