Jewelry Trend: Beading to the max

Six ways to know if you are a Beading Maximalist
Mazimalism_Hero

Forget “less is more.” If you embrace “More is more!” then you might be a maximalist. With colorful glory, maximalism is taking the interior decorating, graphic design, and fashion industries by storm. The beading community is ahead of the curve, with many of us having embraced this style for years without even knowing it. If any or all of these statements reflect your beading aesthetic, then you may be a maximalist.

Betty Stephan, 2010 BeadDreams, “Cathedral Windows.” Don't borrow Betty's crayons; she uses every color until they are puny stumps.

No. 1: YOU CAN'T PICK A FAVORITE COLOR BECAUSE YOU LOVE THEM ALL. (Unless you count rainbow as a color.)

Nadezda Gerber, 2017 BeadDreams, “Necklace Under the Tuscan Sun." Do you think Nadezda started out beading one flower, but she just couldn't stop herself until she made this beautiful botanical collection?

No. 2: YOU FEEL THAT PLAIN IS BORING, AND YOU ALWAYS YEARN FOR MORE.

MaxDHyde
Diane Hyde, 2014 BeadDreams, “Hey! Who’s Been In My Chocolates?” Leave it to Diane to create no-cal. chocolate.

No. 3: YOU FEEL THAT JEWELRY SHOULD BE LIKE A BIG BOX OF CHOCOLATES: RICH AND EXCESSIVE

MaxISlobodyanik
Irina Slobodyanik, 2017 BeadDreams, “Magic Frost Necklace." Beaders never "let it go," even when they are beading up a frozen storm.

No. 4: YOU EMBRACE INTRICATE PATTERNS, REPETITION, AND REDUNDANCY. (Repeat, repeat, and repeat again!)

MaxMWiestHines
Marsha Wiest-Hines, “Picnic in May on Lilac Way.” Be careful if you invite Marsha to your garden — she might pick all your flowers.

No. 5: YOU FEEL UNDERWHELMED VIEWING JEWELRY THAT IS SIMPLE AND LOW-KEY.

MaxFWalton
Francesca Walton, 2011 BeadDreams, “I Will Rise.” They should have invited Francesca to make costumes for "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." She could have given Lenny Kravitz's character, Cinna, a run for his money.

No. 6: YOU UNDERSTAND THAT BIG BOLD BEADWORK IS BEAUTIFUL.

Revolting against minimalism, maximalism is the aesthetic philosophy of excess and redundancy. For beading, that translates to lavish and layered!

Our annual BeadDreams competition promises to bring many, many examples of this magnificent trend. Stay tuned: you'll be able to vote for the People's Choice Award in BeadDreams right here on Facet in late May!

You can view the 2018 BeadDream Winners in person at the 2018 Bead&Button Show from June 7-10 in Milwaukee, WI. If you can't make it to the midwest, watch for the winning images online following the Show, or in print in the 2018 Bead&Button October issue.
