Convert a pendant into a scarf ring

An easy way to create a fresh new look for these cold winter months.

The cool fall weather has hit Wisconsin, and when that happens I like to dig out and wear my scarves for a little added warmth. The problem with that is then I can’t wear my favorite pendants. I figured out a way to do both by converting my hidden bail pendants into scarf rings with a detachable elastic attachment.

A hidden bail on a pendant will have a loop on the back of the pendant for the neck chain, but sewn so that you can’t see the loop when the pendant is worn. A small strip of peyote is the hidden bail on this pendant from Jimmie Boatright: Surfin’ around the waves originally appeared in the August 2016 issue of Bead&Button (PHOTO 1).

What you’ll need is:

  • 1 pendant with a hidden bail
  • 16 - 20 15/0 seed beads in a color to match the pendant
  • 2 ½ - 3 ½ in. piece of elastic about 3/8 in. wide or an elastic hair band. (May need a longer length of elastic depending on the thickness of the scarf)
    2 7 mm split rings
  • 2 lobster claw clasps
  • beading needle and Fireline
  • sewing needle and thread to match the color of elastic

Using 15/0 seed beads, make a small loop on each side of the back of the pendant (PHOTO 2). This loop should be large enough to attach a lobster claw but small enough not to be seen from the front of the pendant. I used eight 15/0s for each loop on my pendant. Reinforce the thread path a couple of times, and end the threads.

Attach one lobster claw to each split ring. Slide one end of the elastic through the split ring, and overlap the elastic 3/8 – 1/2 in. depending on how long your elastic needs to be. The elastic with the split rings attached should be just tight enough to fit around the scarf to hold it in place. Sew the elastic in place to hold the split ring. Repeat for the other end of the elastic (PHOTO 3).

Attach one lobster claw to a loop on the pendant (PHOTO 4), wrap the elastic around the back of the scarf at the desired location, and attach the other lobster clasp to the remaining loop (PHOTO 5). To remove, just unhook the lobster claws from the loops. Because the loops on the back do not show, you can go back to wearing it as a pendant anytime you want. You can also use the elastic attachment for other pendants that are about the same size. Enjoy your favorite pendant year round!
