Infusing autumn in jewelry

Fall hero_edited1

Pumpkins on the vine. Cozy sweaters. Fresh apple cider. Autumn is upon us. Just as we incorporate cool blues and ocean themes into our summer jewelry designs, we have the opportunity to use the warm colors and icons of fall in our projects as we embrace the changing seasons.

The Etruscans introduced us to the term “autumn,” which refers to the passing of the year. Our days become crisper and dusk comes quicker as yellow, orange, and red leaves drift down from deciduous trees. These falling leaves and bountiful harvests inspire most of the colors we associate with the season.
Lillian Chen used these adorable acorn charms in her earring design. Find the complete project directions at Facet Jewelry.
Autumn conjures images of acorns, maple leaves, and cornucopias, as well as mushrooms, pumpkins, apples, and other edibles found at fall feasts and farmer’s markets. Charms with these icons are an easy way to add a seasonal accent to a necklace or bracelet. Your local beading shops, Etsy, and other online beading sources are stocked full of choices.
This forest floor necklace worked up fast as I added pearls and unique bead caps, most by TierraCast, to capture the feel of dangling acorns.
A little more personal than a charm is an easy-to-make seasonal dangle. To make the acorn dangle on the left side of this necklace, string a pearl on a head pin, add a bead cap, and make a wrapped loop with the remaining head pin wire. Attach it to a necklace, ring, bracelet, or earring for a festive seasonal piece of jewelry.
Fall 2017 Pantone Color Report
As we embrace fall colors in our jewelry designs, consider adding these ten seasonal selections from Pantone.
Grenadine, Tawney Port, Autumn Maple, and Butterum are a few of the Pantone Color Institute’s highlights for the 2017 Fall fashion report. These tasty colors translate well into beading as we include darker, stronger, and heavier colors into our autumn designs.
Dottie Hoeschen created "Autumn leaves brooch," which embraces a bushelful of autumn colors. Find the complete project directions at Facet Jewelry.
As much as I hate to see the warmth of summer slip away, fall is my favorite season due to the colorful sights, enticing smells, and unique opportunities it offers. I’ll set my beads down long enough to got for a hike on amber hillsides, pick apples from an orchard, and enjoy many steaming hot pumpkin spice lattes. I'll breathe in the earthy smells of autumn and enjoy. How do you celebrate the season and incorporate it into your designs?
We'd love to see what you create this fall. Our September Design Challenge, HARVEST MOON, runs until September 27, 2017. Submit a photo or two, and be sure to check out the inspiring work of other designers! Voting for the Reader's Choice Award begins on September 15.
